Like the Terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington DC in September 2001, when the World heard what had happened in Galveston and opened their hearts, purses, wallets and checkbooks for the victims. When all was said and done, $781, 043.63 had been donated. Many cities, companies, churches, etc set up relief funds which were sent to Galveston. One city gave the proceeds of a ball game to the fund. In several cases there are the names of individuals and children donating small amounts of money. One of many acts of charity was hosted by William Randolph Hearst of the New York Journal on October 15, 1900 at the Walorf-Astoria in New York. The $50,000 proceeds of the charity was to benefit the rebuilding of the Galveston Orphan’s Home that had been damaged in the Storm. The new buildig was dedicated March 30, 1902 and housed ten children.
